Subject Intent

Here at Skegby Junior Academy, we recognise the value that a high-quality art and design curriculum can offer our pupils as learners and in wider life. Art and design within our academy encourages children to make links to overarching topics through detailed analysis, exploration, making and evaluation. Children’s curiosity is nurtured, and they are encouraged to ask questions to explore further. Children are given opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express individual interests, thoughts and ideas. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding or art and design. They should also know how art and design reflect and shape our history and contribute to culture. Children also become increasingly reflective and confident decision makers.

National Curriculum Aims for Art and Design

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Subject Implementation

Art has a very important place in our curriculum. We see art as a vehicle for creativity, expression and risk-taking, as well as providing opportunities for collaborative work. It is an important form of cultural expression and, therefore, has significance and meaning for all our children. Our teaching encourages an understanding of all the diverse art forms so that the children experience drawing, painting, collage, textiles, 3D designs, printmaking and digital media. Alongside the teaching and learning in explicit lessons, our termly programme of artists exposes children to an even wider range of varied and high quality art work, as well as equipping them with rich vocabulary and analytical skills.
